NEW YORK STATE GRANGE SCHOLARSHIPS
The DeNise Scholarship Fund
Established In 1983
Mr. and Mrs. Howard DeNise, longtime agriculturalists and Grange members in western New York, have established the DeNise Scholarship Fund, with the New York State Grange as the administrator.
PURPOSE: Strong emphasis in awarding these scholarships is placed on need and that the applicants must be agriculturally oriented.
AWARD: $1,000
ELIGIBILITY: This scholarship may be used in any recognized accredited institution of higher learning. Both 2-year associate degree and 4-year baccalaureate degree programs may be pursued. Public and private institutions may be attended within or outside of New York State.
Scholarship assistance is available to undergraduate students only.
Courses of study must entail a major within the field of agriculture.
Applicants must be a resident of New York State.
APPLICATIONS: All applications must be returned to the New York State Grange, 100 Grange Place, Cortland, N.Y. 13045, no later than April 15th. Final selection of the scholarship recipients will be made by a committee appointed by the New York State Grange.
Susan W. Freestone Education Award
Established In 1945
Susan Freestone served as a National Grange Juvenile Superintendent for more than a decade.
PURPOSE: To assist former Junior Grange Members get a higher education.
AWARD: $1,000 (A second grant may be available, providing the student makes application and supplies a satisfactory transcript of work from the college.)
ELIGIBILITY: A candidate must have been a member of a Junior Grange in New York State and must presently be a member in good standing of a Subordinate Grange in New York State.
The candidate must graduate from high school (or approved home school education or passed the General Education Development Test “GED”) and enroll in an approved two or four year college in New York State.
APPLICATIONS: All applications must be returned to the New York State Grange, 100 Grange Place, Cortland, N.Y. 13045, no later than April 15th. Final selection of the scholarship recipients will be made by a committee appointed by the New York State Grange.
Selection will be made after April 15th each year. This award is to be used toward expenses during the freshman year. Winners will be announced at high school graduations or commencement exercises. The money will be paid at the time of enrollment in college.
June Gill Nursing Scholarship
Established In 2002
June Gill was a Grange member and a nurse from Dutchess County New York.
PURPOSE: She established this scholarship fund to encourage Grange members to enter the nursing profession.
AWARD: Two $1,000 Scholarships are available annually, and a recipient may receive only one award. The payment will be sent directly to the school after the successful completion of one term, which must be verified in writing.
ELIGIBILITY: You must be an adult or student Grange Member in good standing to receive this award.
Selection will be based on the following:
Verification of enrollment in a Nursing Program
Verification of Grange Membership
Review of Applicant’s Career Statement, Academic Records, and Financial Need.
Public and private institutions may be attended within or outside New York State.

Clifford D. Herman Scholarship
Established 2025
Clifford D. Herman, was a longtime Grange member and FFA supporter from Seneca County New York. The New York State Grange is the administrator of this scholarship.
PURPOSE: Strong emphasis in awarding these scholarships is placed on need, GPA and a member in good standing of the Grange or FFA.
AWARD: $1,000.00
ELIGIBILITY: This scholarship may be used in any recognized accredited institution of higher learning. Trade schools, certificates, 2-year associate degree and 4-year baccalaureate degree programs may be pursued. Institutions must be part of the CUNY or SUNY system within New York State.
Scholarship assistance is available to undergraduate students only.
Open to high school seniors.
Applicants must be a resident of New York State.
Students with a GPA between 75-89 or 2.0-3.6 are eligible to apply.
APPLICATIONS: All applications must be returned to the New York State Grange, 100 Grange Place, Cortland, NY 13045, no later that April 15th. Final selection of the scholarship recipients will be made by a committee appointed by the New York State Grange.
The New York State Grange Cornell Fund
Established in 1973
In 1973, an endowment fund was established by the New York State Grange.
PURPOSE: To provide an additional Financial Aid opportunity for transfer students from New York State two-year colleges with an agricultural background that are enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell.
AWARD: Determined by the Cornell Endowment Fund.
ELIGIBILITY: An award is made to a student in any class in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell. Selection is based on character, scholastic record, and need for financial assistance.
Preference is given to students that are farm-reared or have farm experience, whose families are or have been Grange members. The student does not need to be a member of the Grange..
Preference is also given to students who transfer from Alfred State College, Morrisville State College, SUNY Cobeskill or a New York State Community College..
APPLICATIONS: The Cornell Application form on this website may be used to make initial submission. All applications must be received by June 1st, via mail to New York State Grange, 100 Grange place, Cortland, N.Y. 13045 or via email at nysgrange@nysgrange.org
Applicants must have filed a Financial aid application at Cornell University and must be eligible for financial aid. Review of applicant’s financial need is performed by Cornell University.
The New York State Grange Student Loan
PURPOSE: The fund is maintained by contributions from Granges, Grange members, and repayment of student loans. It is designed to assist Grangers in their higher education.
ELIGIBILITY: Only members of a New York State Grange, who have been members for at least six months are eligible.
APPLICATIONS: Application blanks are available by contacting the New York State Grange at 100 Grange Place, Cortland, NY 13045, Telephone 607-756-7553, or downloaded from this site. The full-year loan is dispensed in two awards. The application must be signed by the Subordinate Grange president and secretary, with the Grange seal affixed. A substitute should sign if either the president or secretary is related to the applicant. The application must also be signed by a parent or another person who agrees to be co-signor of the loan.
Deadline: August 15 for the fall semester, December 15 for the spring semester.
LOANS: Loans are for $1,000 per semester or a total of $2,000 per year. However, a student does not have to apply for the full amount. There is a maximum of $10,000 to any loanee. Additional Graduate Loans are also available.
PROCEDURE: The loan is secured by a note signed by the student and a parent or guardian, as maker and joint maker, respectively.
REPAYMENT OF LOAN: The student will begin loan repayment at two and one half percent (2.5%) annual interest after completion of his or her education. Monthly payment coupons will be sent.
NOTE: No interest is paid until education at a formal institution is ceased. At that time regular monthly payments will be set up for a five-year payment plan.
